World Health Organization Faces Major Staff Reduction After United States Financial Pullout

The international public health organization revealed intentions to reduce its workforce by nearly a quarter – totaling more than two thousand positions – before the middle of 2026.

Financial Shortfall Triggers Major Reorganization

The decision follows after the US, formerly the agency's biggest donor, withdrew financial support earlier this year.

The US government had been contributing about 18% of the organization's overall funding, creating a significant budgetary shortfall.

Projected Workforce Reductions

According to internal projections, the workforce will decrease from nine thousand four hundred and one positions in early 2025 to approximately 7,030 by June 2026.

This reduction of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one posts includes job cuts, employees retiring, and regular departures.

"The past year has been among the toughest in WHO's existence, as we have navigated a painful but essential journey of prioritisation and realignment," stated the organization's leader.

Budget Gap Remains

This Geneva-based body currently faces a funding gap of $1.06bn for the upcoming period, representing almost a quarter of its total budget.

The figure marks an reduction from a previous estimated shortfall of $1.7bn reported in May.

Excluded Funding

These financial calculations exclude a further $1.1bn in expected funding from ongoing negotiations with multiple donors.

A spokesperson for the agency stated that the current unsecured portion of the biennial budget is actually lower than in previous periods, crediting this to several reasons:

  • A smaller overall budget size
  • The launch of a new fundraising effort
  • Higher in participating countries' mandatory fees

The realignment process is currently nearing its completion, allowing the agency to progress with a renewed structure.
