The Way AI Images of Maduro Emerged Rapidly
The first inauthentic synthetic picture seemingly showing him being escorted off a aircraft emerged shortly after. The graphic was absent from any authoritative US channels; it was instead uploaded on X by an profile describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
We’ve checked Google’s SynthID, confirming the image was generated or edited with Google AI.
More AI-generated pictures began to spread in the ensuing hours, appearing to show different views of Maduro under guard. Visible identifying marks on the graphics show they came from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
The detection tool says all of these pictures were similarly produced using Google AI.
Real Photo Released but Fakes Persisted
The former US president posted the initial authentic image of Nicolás Maduro in handcuffs aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. But even after this confirmation was published, AI-generated images persisted online but were updated to incorporate the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.
Reverse image searches indicate these altered fabrications were initially shared on the video platform by a digital art account. Similarly, the AI-watermark detector found these further images were created or altered AI tools.
