UK Extends Methanol Toxicity Advisory Roster with 11 Nations
British authorities has added 11 further countries to its official alert register regarding the risks of methanol poisoning from adulterated spirits.
The revised advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the frequency of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol toxicity.
Just last month, the government had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, after multiple serious incidents like the deadly demise of six visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being warned that even minimal doses of industrial alcohol can cause vision loss or loss of life within 12–48 hours.
What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?
Methanol is a harmful chemical typically utilized in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not intended for drinking.
While it is naturally produced during the manufacture of spirits, licensed producers reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the distillation process.
But in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to save money, and because it is flavorless and scentless, it is very difficult to notice.
Government Recommendations for Tourists
Government official Hamish Falconer stated that every traveler should be aware of the indicators of industrial alcohol contamination.
"If you're consuming alcohol overseas, choose reputable establishments and refrain from unlicensed drinks or free shots," Falconer warned.
"In case something appears suspicious, like a headache that's much more severe than typical or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention immediately."
The complete roster of destinations identified as presenting a danger of methanol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
