King Charles Officially Removes Andrew of Royal Highness Title and Princely Dignity
In a decisive move, King Charles has officially removed Andrew Mountbatten Windsor of his HRH style and his princely title.
These alterations were formalized by issuing royal documents under the Great Seal of the Realm, that have been published in the UK's official public record.
The entry declared: âHis Majesty has been pleased by letters patent under the Great Seal dated 3 November 2025 to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall cease to be entitled to possess the designation of âRoyal Highnessâ and the honorific status of âPrinceâ.â
A separate entry affirmed the removal of the Duke of York from the roll of peerage, effective immediately.
It read: âThe king has been pleased to direct by warrant under his royal sign manual dated 30 October 2025 to direct his government minister to ensure the Duke of York to be struck from the peerage roll.â
Background of the Royal Action
The decision comes after increasing controversy over the former prince's connections to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, exacerbated by the release of a memoir by Virginia Giuffre.
The author claimed that she was sexually abused by the former prince after being trafficked by Epstein, claims that Mountbatten Windsor has always strenuously denied.
Procedure of Removing Titles
The king utilized his monarchical powersârecognized authorities held by the monarchâafter consultation with government advisers, rather than through parliamentary means.
Royal instruments and royal warrants are tools of this prerogative, used to bestow or revoke honors and styles.
Since the HRH style is conferred by such documents, it can be withdrawn through the same instrument.
Further Measures and Backing
Following the palace statement, the senior legal official was directed to prepare the necessary documents for the removal of titles.
This action also involves Andrew relinquishing his lease on Royal Lodge, a thirty-room royal property where he has resided for twenty years.
The government endorsed the monarch's move.
Retained Honor
In spite of the loss of titles, it was confirmed that Mountbatten Windsor will keep his Falklands service medal, granted for his service as a Sea King helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands War.
